Film classification

From visiting the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), we have concluded that our film would hypothetically be rated a 15. This means that "no-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema, or buy/rent a 15 rated video." Therefore, our film is accessible to our target audience (under 18 years age demographic).

Our film is a thriller. Tensions are running high. Therefore, characters frequently use "strong language", which is typical of a 15 rated film. Also, our opening will feature the antagonist aiming a gun at the protagonist. This could be considered an example of "strong violence", another typical convention of a 15 rated film. Furthermore, our film is set in a stereotypical suburban neighborhood. Therefore, it may include "drug taking".

In my opinion, the depiction of a gun as an easily accessible weapon in our opening sequence is acceptable because it is used contextually; it symbolises violence as a theme. The gun also constructs realism in the respect that is reflects the instability of our antagonist, a troublesome psychopath.

Considering the above, 15 is an acceptable rating for Killjoy. An audience aged 15+ are unlikely to be influenced by "frequent strong language [and] violence." because they are relatively mature. In comparison, viewers aged <15 may find our film frightening and upsetting because it contains some disturbing and compelling themes, e.g. psychopathy.
